Lessons Learned After Ten Years of Recovery, Rehabilitation, and Restoration

As part of the National Forest Foundation’s Treasured Landscapes, Unforgettable Experiences campaign to restore the most severely burned areas of the Hayman Fire area, the NFF is hosting the Hayman Fire Science Symposium: Lessons Learned after Ten Years of Recovery, Rehabilitation, & Restoration. The Symposium includes indoor sessions at the downtown Denver R.E.I. store community room and an evening reception on June 21, and a field tour through the Hayman Fire area on June 22.
Topics during the Symposium will include:
· Hayman wildfire behavior;
· Watershed impacts: burn severity, erosion, water quality, and restoration;
· Ecological responses: plant communities, exotic species, and wildlife;
· Lessons learned about living with wildfire.
Since the Hayman Fire of 2002, a significant amount of scientific research and learning has occurred at the site of this well-known fire. The 10th anniversary of the Hayman Fire in June 2012, in conjunction with the National Forest Foundation’s Treasured Landscapes campaign, provides a timely opportunity to convene research scientists with land managers, planners, conservation organizations and interested community members. This is a special opportunity to highlight research and learning that can benefit future decisions about wildfire mitigation and collaborative restoration.
Registration is limited on a first come, first serve basis. The Field Tour is currently full and closed to new registrations. Participants may register for one or both days but spaces for the field tour will be prioritized for those who attend the first day of indoor presentations.
